How do I know if warranty is still valid?

Alright, so my friend gave me his RROD xbox and told me I can have it to do whatever I want with it.
It looks as if he tried to open it, but didn't succeed, I'm not sure if he even got past those damned clips to get the shell open, and I don't know much about what voids the warranty. If I take the case off, does that void it, or what does? Where is this "warranty" sticker?
